The red/spiny shells wouldn't even flip them in the air but only pauses them.
#SUPER MARIO KART 64 ITEM GLITCHES PLUS#
Plus because of the horrible draw distance, if a com got to far away from your sight. THAT the guy you can't lose your sight on are you will never catch him. The two character that competed with you had a lead character out of the two. There were always two characters that really competed with you while the rest were just there for show. Still in spite of all this, I still had fun with it and it didn't piss me off nearly as much as Mario Kart Wii (easily the worst in the series). Mushrooms are also useless since, as mentioned before, the other racers always manage to keep up with you. Even the blue shell has this problem and very rarely ever hits the person in 1st place.
If he's a good distance ahead, the red shell will simply crash into a wall.
#SUPER MARIO KART 64 ITEM GLITCHES DRIVER#
The red shell only ever works if the other driver is right in front of you. It also sucks that most of the items in that game are useless. This makes the races either ridiculously easy (rainbow road is a piece of cake) or downright impossible. The other racers are always able to keep up with you no matter how well you drive and if they get a good distance in front of you, you'll never be able to reclaim that position. It's still a fun game but the rubberbanding is ridiculous. I recently picked up the game on the Wii's VC in preparation for MK8 and yes, the game definitely hasn't aged well. Series has come along way.but I still love all the Mario Karts regardless. I love you 64 version, but seriously there were some fine tuning yet to do. Also another thing to mention is that I got a star in second em balance seemed a little off there, and spiney shell is worthless. So as far as it goes I think Mario Kart 64 definitely had the cheapest AI in the series. One horrible part is that I was following Bowser fairly closely and then all of a sudden he disappears, probably because of the draw distance, but he has a good lead on me then. However, the next two levels the AI weren't nearly as cheap. I dodge all the cars, got a super mushroom and a star and couldn't catch that bastard Toad. Seriously on 150CC Toad's Turnpike, I tried so many times to get first, but the character who is in the lead originally gets like a good 5 second lead on me and no matter what I can't catch up. Unlike Super Mario Kart where the stages are what makes the game hard, the AI in 64 is ridiculous. I just got through Super Mario Kart, which was super hard, but then got to 64. I'm celebrating Mario Kart 8 by playing through all the Mario Kart games.
